CATCH UP, GET AHEAD with 15% SUMMER '09 TUITION SAVINGS
The 15 percent reduction in the university's summer session tuition that was approved by the Board of Trustees in December 2007 is part of an emphasis on the summer term that began in 2008 and continues in Summer 2009. At a time of economic decline, the 15 percent tuition savings is an added benefit to a summer with ample course options.
The University of Vermont's Summer U is designed to help students catch up, get ahead and finish in four years, or even less. A key benefit to students in summer session is that they are able to more affordably enroll in classes that were full during the regular semester, heading off the dissatisfaction that can come from being unable to enroll in a desired or required course. This can positively impact retention and graduation rates with an increased utilization of summer courses. Finishing in four years or less is valuable to families looking to mitigate annual increases in tuition and students wanting to enter the workforce sooner.
Bringing more students into the summer program is also a more efficient and environmentally responsible use of the UVM campus, since classes are not currently running at full capacity. With over 100 courses online, students can access Summer U from their laptops wherever they go in summer, taking the lower summer tuition rates with them.
The 15 percent tuition savings is an opportunity to establish a virtuous cycle where lower prices will influence higher enrollments, which in turn will attract more faculty to offer more courses - which should spur further enrollment. A more affordable - and more robust - summer program will benefit all students.
