Plant & Soil Sciences – UVM On-Farm Summer Institute
Take advantage of summer savings and Vermont’s fabulous growing season. On-Farm Summer Institute students and instructors get their hands dirty exploring practical techniques for raising fruit, vegetables, grains, pasture and fuel crops in consort with all of the other communities in the ecosystem – from weeds to microbes. Reduced tuition rate for out of state students! Out-of-state students can take one or more core PSS courses (Weed Ecology, Entomology & Pest Management, Cold Climate Viticulture and Plant Pathology) at the in-state tuition rate. Ecology of Food Systems – Summer Course.
Course Description: Ecology of Food Systems PSS 296 (CRN: 61199)

Learn key conceptual approaches to understanding food systems, such as systems thinking, ecological design and agroecology and experience the ecology of the Burlington organic vegetable food system first-hand. A Five-Day, Intensive Summer Program for Professional Development or College Credit.

Special Topics in Food offered this Summer

Earn up to 15 credits through in-depth study of the food system with consecutively scheduled short-course intensives offered throughout the summer.

Minor in Food Systems (earned by taking courses over 2 summers)
This interdisciplinary minor in Food Systems gives students the knowledge and skills necessary to understand our complex interdependent food system of food production, processing, distribution and consumption.

Minor in Ecological Agriculture (earned by taking courses over 2 summers)
This minor is designed to give students a knowledge-based concentration in diversified crop production based on ecological principles and is economically viable, socially acceptable, and minimizes impacts to the environment.
