Section Expectation

Syllabus- Before we meet as a class: ? Find at least one article pertinent to this topic related to career(s) and and one related to college(s) in either newspapers, magazines or on the web, and bring a copy of each with you to the first class. ? Select a book from the list of books below (or propose a book not on the list) and let the instructors know which book you are planning to read. (The first person to ?claim? a book gets to read the book of his/her choice. Each book will only be read by one person.) Be prepared to present and discuss this book during the second class meeting time. ? E-mail the instructors about any questions or issues related to this topic that you want to make sure we cover during our time in class. Day1: ? We want to use the first day to focus on future planning by looking at ourselves from the aspects of the social/emotional, academic and personal domains, in terms of our high school-aged selves and how who we were then impacted (and continues to impact)our educational and career trajectories. ? We will take some interest inventories, look at the Naviance, VSAC and ONET websites as resources. ? We will take a look at the school system(s) that we work in (if you are presently employed as an educator) in terms of how the post secondary advising process works (or doesn?t). Day 2: ? On the second day, using a mock student?s profile, we will determine how best to advise and work with our student from the aspects of the social/emotional, academic and personal domains.
