Section Description

Ever wonder where Tolkien came up with the word `hobbit?? Want to know the literary sources behind the names of the dwarves. Does Bilbo?s conversation with the dragon Smaug spark your imagination? Are you curious to know the degree to which The Hobbit is a mythological masterpiece? Interested in plotting Bilbo Baggins? growth as a hero? In this three-credit online course, we will focus solely on Tolkien?s achievement in transforming a story for his children into a wonderfully crafted fairy-story that left its readers of 1937/38 begging for more hobbits. Students will be evaluated through their postings, an art review, two one-page reaction papers, a final eight-page paper, and their postings.
