More Information

Section Description

PBIO 187 Survey of Biochemistry Lab is your chance to get up close and personal with fundamental concepts of biochemistry. Through our exploration of these concepts, you will gain experience in basic biochemical techniques and develop your ability to design appropriate experiments, critically analyze data, and present the findings of your analyses. Concepts we will explore include acid-base properties of amino acids, protein structure, enzyme kinetics, properties of lipids, carbohydrate chemistry, and gene expression. Analyses will involve techniques used in a broad range of scientific research such as titration, spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and microarray analyses. We will examine the principles of these techniques - how they work - and consider their applications and limitations - what they can help us understand. Course Goals 1) Improve your ability to design experiments, analyze data, and effectively communicate your findings 2) Gain a better understanding of fundamental biochemical concepts through hands-on analyses 3) Develop an understanding of the principles, applications, and limits of common biochemical techniques

Section Expectation

Course Materials 1) Laboratory "Manual" (Handouts) - Handouts for each lab will be posted on BlackBoard in advance and should be printed out prior to each lab. You should purchase a three-ring binder in which to keep your handouts. If it is not feasible for you to print out the handouts, please let me know as soon as possible so other arrangements can be made. 2) Ring binder for lab handouts (1") 3) Bound notebook with graph paper ruling (quad ruled) - Composition Notebook with 4" Quad Ruling can be purchased at the bookstore for ~$2.50 4) Scientific calculator - You will need to perform calculations during most labs, so please make sure you bring your calculator with you to each lab period. 5) Safety glasses or goggles (required) 6) Laboratory coat (recommended)
