Section Description

English 111: Race(ing) Crime, Criminalizing Race. What is the relationship between race and crime? How does race become criminalized and how does crime become raced? This class explores the very complex and politically charged relationship between race and crime through literature and media, including film, television, and journalism. We will pay particular attention to our own assumptions of race and criminal behavior as well as (re)define our understanding of crime, justice, and punishment. We will also examine how these various narratives practice, endorse, overturn, and/or destabilize processes of racialization.

Section Expectation

This is a reading intensive class. Everyone is expected to participate in class discussion, including in-class presentations. Film screenings will be included in class.
