The major course emphasis is on extending and refining knowledge about reading and writing instruction and assessment within a developmental framework. Students will identify components of effective literacy programs and approaches, and use research findings to develop classroom-based assessment strategies, materials, lessons, and units for literacy instruction. Students will use data gathered through formative assessment design lessons for reading instruction, as well as groupings for spelling instruction. Students will also be expected to create vocabulary and writing lessons, participate in literature discussion groups, and maintain a writer's notebook. The format for accomplishing these goals will vary and will include lectures, large and small group discussion, in-school experiences, and assigned readings.
