Topics include fundamental EXCEL training and advanced EXCEL toolkits can be applicable to person/business financial analysis, forecasting, simulations, industry trend analysis, human resource data analysis, nutrient/food consumption analysis, enrollment management, or any large scale data analysis.

CDAE 295 Summer 2013 Jun 03, 2013 - Jun 07, 2013, Monday Through Friday 9am to 5pm Data Analysis and Management in EXCEL Applications in Statistical Modeling and Financial Analysis Instructor: Dr. Chyi-lyi (Kathleen) Liang Office: 103 C Morrill Hall Phone: 656 0754 E-mail: CLIANG@UVM.edu Purpose of the Course This course focuses on using advanced EXCEL functions to calculate, manage and analyze any scale of data sets. Topics include fundamental EXCEL training and advanced EXCEL toolkits can be applicable to person/business financial analysis, forecasting, simulations, industry trend analysis, human resource data analysis, nutrient/food consumption analysis, enrollment management, or any large scale data analysis. Many unique datasets will be introduced in this class to facilitate participants? learning. These datasets have been purchased and maintained by UVM library, which covers a wide range of information for business, human resource, and economic analysis. Participants need to have some EXCEL experience in working with basic functions, such as data entry and simple calculations. The contents of the course involve economics theories (Micro and Macro) and Statistics (simple descriptive statistics and regression). These contents will be reviewed and be incorporated into the computer applications. Structure of the Course This is a hands-on and application course. The class meets in the computer lab every day. Participants may bring own computers, and must install EXCEL (for Windows or Mac) software prior to attending this course. Discussions and interactions are the key elements of this course. Each day, participants need to prepare for a progress report. Each participant will conduct a mini independent research project, by choosing your own research topic. The final paper is due on the last day of the class. To make EXCEL more fun to learn, each participant will also learn and complete a personal finance analysis using EXCEL. Tentative Schedule Day 1 Introduction ? getting to know each other Knowledge pre-assessment Learning expectations ? setting goals EXCEL Basic Functions(data entry, graphs, charts) Foundation of forecasting Moving Average Analysis for time series data Seasonality analysis and graphs Foundation of the Statistics Descriptive Statistics Correlation Coefficients Using EXCEL to calculate Day 2 Continue the Foundation of Statistics Theories of Regression Analysis Using EXCEL to calculate Continue on the Regression Analysis Self-designed project (discussion and presentation) Define your topic Data collection and primary analysis Graphs and charts Day 3 Check on the projects Foundation of the Financial Analysis ? definitions and terms Cash Flow, Income Statement (Profit and Loss), Balance Sheet Business Analysis Information ? Business Assistant Database in the Library Day 4 Examples of the Financial Analysis Constructing your own financial analysis (use the records that you have been keeping since Dec 2012) Continue the financial and budgeting discussions Putting everything together ? forecasting and financial analysis Day 5 Reviews ? putting everything together Final presentations (10 minutes per person) Learning reflections Learning Assessment Class participation 30% Assignments 30% Presentations 30% Professionalism 10% General Policies 1.
