About AT 155 Z1

Students will obtain skills and instruction necessary for emergency response in athletic training. Students will be prepared for certification in American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response, including CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Emergency Oxygen Administration. For AT majors only.



Dates: May 22 - August 11, 2017 Lecture/Lab course with the lecture taught on-line and the lab in Rowell 003, as planned by instructor and student; All majors welcome for Summer Session

Section Description

This course will prepare students with the skills necessary for emergency medical response, specifically in the athletic training sport medicine setting. Students will learn skills required to provide appropriate care to emergently ill or injured athletes, as delineated by the role and responsibilities of a certified athletic trainer. Emergency care is one of the most critical components for an athletic training professional. *This SUMMER section is open to ALL MAJORS. Skills include: VITAL SIGNS, administering EMERGENCY OXYGEN, AIRWAY management, CPR & AED, SPLINTING & TRANSPORTATION, WOUND CARE, ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS, SHOCK, and more. The section is conducted as a hybrid course over the summer. The students will coordinate with the instructor to meet in person for 12-16 hours, usually conducted over a 2-day period, in order to complete the laboratory components. The remaining didactic coursework will be completed online, allowing for the remainder of the summer to finish the requirements.

Section Expectation

*PACE: All course material is posted at the start of the course. You can move through the material as fast as you want, with the expectation that you will submit assignments by the stated due dates. I have prepared units that will parallel time frames expected, in order to provide a strategy for a pace that meets the deadlines.


Thee students will take the written exam and skills practical for American Red Cross certification for CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Health Care Provider. Athletic training students must meet the minimum requirement for these exams in order to meet retention and promotion guidelines for the ATEP.
