More Information

Section Description

This course will cover selected topics regarding nutrition in relation to overall health and exercise. Some of the topics to be covered include: bioenergetics, carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism during exercise, nutrient timing and adaptations, weight management, as well as various co-morbidities and subsequent nutrition implications. Course Objectives: 1. Develop an understanding of the macronutrient needs of active individuals and how nutrition effects exercise performance. 2. Describe macronutrient metabolism and nutrient requirements during various types of activities, along with the rationale for those requirements. 3. Describe how co-morbidities, age, and gender may (or may not) alter metabolism of nutrients during physical activity. 4. Define and describe healthful nutrition practices for weight control and fitness/sports. 5. Understand how nutrient needs vary depending on specific sports/activities and health conditions.

Section Expectation

Since this is not a basic nutrition course, a fundamental understanding of macro- and micronutrients, digestion of nutrients and recommended dietary intake is recommended (e.g. NFS 043). The majority of content and communication will occur through Bb although you will often receive emails from me as well. Since this course is taught over a 4-week period, checking Bb and your email on a daily basis is strongly recommended. The course progresses quickly and you will likely have to devote time to the course just about every day; however, the course content is designed with intention to be manageable. On my end, I will do everything I can to help you be successful in the course and try to make it enjoyable as well.

Evaluation

Grades may be based on exams, class participation including discussion & voice thread posts, diet evaluation, critical questions and case studies assignments, and presentations.
