More Information

Section Description

This course is one for RN to BS students designed to prepare students for development of a understanding and action plan related to health disparities, from structural deficits to marginalization, subtler prejudices, to policy issues that affect them and us as we try to build a more peaceful and unified world. We will learn how violence and racism affect health and what can be done about it from within the structures we have now, or the ones we want to build. We will also examine our own actions as they affect our own well being and that of others. The textbook has been ordered from the bookstore. It is Social Injustice and Public Health. There are side readings and videos to watch.

Section Expectation

The course will be lengthened to fill the summer but can be taken in smaller bites until completed by August 11, 2017. There will be no delays. The end will be an excellent show of some aspect of the course involving multimedia and put up for grading based on faculty evaluation of impact. The syllabus will be completed before the start of the program. It would be a good idea to start it immediately.

Evaluation

Students will be asked to write weekly responses to classmate's comments, take a weekly quiz on written material, write a reflection at the end and complete the final project using multimedia and one of the topics of the class. All work will be evaluated for accuracy, completeness, clarity, and impact of material. Quizzes will be graded. Written work will have rubrics.
