Learn the fundamentals of acting and the art of improvisation in this two pronged summer Academy class. Morning classes will aim to help students to develop and discover their authentic and creative response through improvisation. Using relaxation techniques, a variety of situation and character-based improvisation games and basic principles of acting, students will gain a better understanding of how we communicate and the nature of spontaneous expression. We will have the option of presenting our work to an invited audience at the end of the course. In the afternoon, students will learn the basics of modern acting technique. Through games and exercises, we will explore concepts of relaxation, observation, listening, responding, imagination and more. Our work will culminate in the performance of monologues and ten-minute plays. In the on-line portion of the course, students will view and critique various videotaped performances, as well as respond to readings and reflective prompts on a class shared blog.
