High School Students
High school students are welcome at the University of Vermont, through a variety of enrollment options, in an array of program and course offerings. Whether your goal is to get a jump on college, take a challenging or unique course not available in your high school or ease your transition into your future college career, UVM Summer U has many ways for you to access the University community.
Enrollment options:
- Guaranteed Admission Program
- WHO: Students not prepared for admission to a degree program, or high school graduates who did not go to college immediately after graduation.
- WHAT:
- Highly motivated students, committed to further their education.
- Not a remedial program, but guided by one-on-one sessions with an academic advisor
- Helps students demonstrate their readiness for college in a supportive environment
- Courses that count directly toward admission and degree requirements.
- Dual Enrollment
- WHO: Vermont High School Students
- WHAT:
- Statewide program for high school students to access up to two UVM courses with tuition fully reimbursed by Next Generation Funds, a Vermont State Legislative funded program.
- University of Vermont courses available with this program include many summer offerings, including the Summer Arts classes, the World Debate program, and many online and on campus options.
- Funds must be used in the Legislative budget year, fiscal year July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008.
- Interested students need only contact Nichole Hathaway, High School Student Advisor, to begin the process by calling 802.656.2085.
- Academically Talented High School Students program
- WHO: Vermont High School Students
- WHAT:
- Enroll in UVM courses, gain academic credits, and receive a special tuition rate, $217 per credit.
- Students can take on campus and online courses through this program.
- Students are responsible for all course fees.
- Summer Enrichment Summer Program
- WHO: Low Income and First-Generation Incoming Freshman
- WHAT:
- Bridge program sponsored by and administered through the ALANA Student Center.
- Introduces students to University life before the challenges of the first year formally begin.
- Participants in the program take two classes (worth 4 credits), with room and board and have paid campus jobs
- Orient to life at the University, make friends, become familiar with the campus and ease into the rigor of college courses.
- Linking Learning to Life
- WHO: Vermont High School Students
- WHAT:
- A non-profit organization that helps K-12 students prepare for life after high school
- College Connections program lets students explore college while still in high school

- Learn how to make better decisions about college studies and career goals.
- Get a feel for what it's like to take notes in a college lecture, interact with faculty and study more intensely.
- Small class sizes for more personalized attention from instructors.
- As a college-bound student, lighten your academic load during your first year of college.
- World Debate Institute

- Gain a life skill - learn how to communicate in a meaningful way.
- Learn how to research a topic, express an argument and convince others – or even meet them halfway.
- Experience "boot camp for the brain and for free speech as well" (New York Times)
- Summer Arts programs

- Learn and create with nationally recognized leaders in their fields.
- Student will have an intensive, and possibly transformative, creative experience.
- Choose from:
- Musical Theater Performance with faculty from the Circle in the Square Theater School;
- Physical Comedy with Obie Award winner Bob Berky;
- World Music: Gamelan, with renowned teacher Jody Diamond (non-musicians welcome);
- Latin Jazz Culture & Performance with renowned trumpeter Ray Vega (non-musicians can take percussion or Latin dance).
