More Information

Section Description

This course will prepare athletic training students with the skills necessary for emergency medical response in the athletic training setting. Athletic training students will be instructed on the specific skills and knowledge required to provide appropriate care to emergently ill or injured athletes, as delineated by the role and responsibilities of a certified athletic trainer. Emergency care is one of the most critical components for an athletic training professional. The course is conducted as a hybrid course over the summer. The students will coordinate with the instructor to meet in person for a minimum of 16 hours in order to complete the laboratory components. The remaining didactic coursework will be completed as an online requirement. The students will take the written exam and skills practical for American Red Cross certification for CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Health Care Provider, including Administering Emergency Oxygen. *This summer course is open to non-AT majors as space allows.

Section Expectation

It is expected that the student is available for approximately 16 hours of in-person laboratory time. The time and days will be agreed upon between the course professor and the student prior to the start of the course, and dependent on factors such as lab availability. *PACE: All didactic course material is posted at the start of the course. You can move through the material as fast as you want, with the expectation that you will submit assignments by the stated due dates. I have prepared units that will parallel time frames expected, in order to provide a strategy for a pace that allows for review and completion of the material daily.

Attendance for in-class laboratory sessions is mandatory. Failure to attend will result in failure for the course. The hands-on skills are an overwhelming necessity of the content in this course. Participation and Preparation (65% of final grade): - Blackboard Quizzes (15%) - Completion of EMR Workbook Assignments (25%) - Examinations (25%) Participation in Athletic Training Skills Session (35% of grade) *Student must show competence in all required clinical skills by the end of the summer course for students wishing to continue in the Athletic Training Education Program. Failure to do so will result in an incomplete grade in the course for the semester (refer to retention and promotion guidelines in the UVM ATEP Handbook for clinical repercussions).
