More Information

Section Description

Biochemistry explores biological processes at the molecular level, examining the chemical reactions that make life possible. The course starts with fundamental concepts essential for understanding cellular processes including molecular interactions, acid-base chemistry, and the energetics of cellular reactions. In addition, we examine proteins, focusing on their roles as cellular catalysts (enzymes), in order to understand how rates of chemical reactions are controlled in cells. From there, we explore how biological information is stored, maintained, and processed in cells, looking closely at the processes responsible for producing proteins. In the second half of the course, involves applying your understanding of cellular reaction energetics and enzyme function to explore metabolism, concentrating on the synthesis and breakdown of carbohydrates and lipids. Throughout the class, we?ll apply biochemical concepts to explain various diseases and ?everyday? phenomena.
