This upper-level course for poets of proven ability employs a seminar/workshop format, with most classroom time devoted to manuscript discussion. May be repeated once for credit. Prerequisites: ENGS 053; minimum Sophomore standing.

ENGS 119 Advanced Creative Writing Poetry is designed to develop student creativity and fluency in identifying and writing poetry. The course is offered as a series of online writing assignments in which students will receive feedback from peers and the professor. We will write poems that enhance our facility with metaphoric language and poetic forms but also that serves as a evidence of our authentic voice and perception of the world.
The course is offered as a series of online workshops with sensitive yet rigorous critiques of poems written for this course and group discussions as the core of our work. Students will be required to complete reading assignments from the textbook Writing Poems edited by Michelle Boisseau, Hadara Bar-Nadav, and Robert Wallace and to complete writing assignments; further, students will write original poems based on assignments.
