Section Description

This is an online course. Students registering for this course should be disciplined and prepared to take on a greater level of responsibility for their learning than would be required in a face to face version of the course. This is not a course that is "easier" to take online! From the catalog: Foundations of probability, conditioning, and independence. Business, computing, biological, engineering reliability, and quality control applications. Classical discrete and continuous models. Prerequisites: MATH 020 or MATH 022. Course Summary: This course involves the study of random phenomena. The notion of probability is developed from an experimental as well as a theoretical perspective. We will use mathematics skills including set theory, combinatorics, limits, infinite series, exponential and logarithmic functions, derivative and integral evaluation including integration by parts and double integrals. Note that successful completion of differential and integral calculus is a prerequisite for this course. Required Text: "Probability and Statistical Inference" by Hogg, Tanis & Zimmerman (9th edition). This is available from the publisher (Pearson) as an ebook starting at $86 for a 180 day rental. New printed copies are approximately $200. Note that I will assign problems from the book and the problems in older editions and international editions are not all the same. There will be a copy of the book available on reserve at the library.
