Section Description

This course is an exploration of the fundamental theories, methodologies, and empirical research that criminologists use in their attempt to study the relationship between social factors and crime. It seeks to understand the extent of the crime problem as a whole and as broken down into specific offenses, as well as the characteristics of people involved in crime as both offenders and as victims. Another goal is to provide students with an overview of the criminal justice system by examining the theoretical and empirical as well as social, political, and moral bases of punishment, prevention and rehabilitation. There are two texts for the course: Frailing and Harper's Fundamentals of Criminology, 2nd Edition, and Wideman's Brothers and Keepers

Section Expectation

This is an online course given over a condensed time period. Students should expect to devote significant time to the course during its relatively brief duration.

The major evaluation in the course will consist of three objective examinations as well as one short (5-7 page double-spaced) paper.
