About EDML 200 SW1

This course highlights the importance of Lev Vygotsky's learning theories, among others - in the general integration of literacy (reading, writing and technology) in the middle grades content area classroom. Modeling strategies for students is one of the most powerful ways to teach literacy, especially in combination with community participation, critical thinking, and a united approach to learning goals. We will consider the roles of motivation, metacognition, and schema theory as they relate to reading. We will also consider the intersection of technology and literacy learning in the classroom. In this course, you will explore and identify literacy in your content area: to learn why it's a struggle for some middle grade students to become expert readers, to foster the excitement of reading and writing, to learn about good literacy practice and assessment in grades 5-8, and to explore how literacy mediates and supports thinking in the knowledge-building of content.
