About MU 095 Z1

NOTE: As final performance takes place on Friday, July 25 High School students will need to stay on campus through Saturday morning (or plan on returning home Friday night after the performance). Latin Jazz: Culture and Performance Explore the culture and music of Latin Jazz through this course that combines classroom study with performance and is open to both experienced musicians and novices. Dubbed ?la combinacion perfecta? Latin Jazz fuses the sophisticated harmonies, melodies, and improvisations of North American jazz with the complex rhythms and chordal vamps of the Afro-Caribbean. The first week, students will study Latin Jazz roots in Afro-Cuban, Caribbean, and Brazilian traditions, and examine the influence of Latin dance music on the popular music of the United States. Latin Jazz is explored from its inception in New York City during the 1940s to the present. The second week, is led by special guest artist Arturo O'Farrill, who is one of the most respected performers in Latin Jazz today. There will be hands-on workshops and rehearsals in ensemble playing and hand percussion. The class culminates in a performance at the FlynnSpace on the final day of class. Registration will not be considered complete until the student has submitted an application form and been accepted into the program.
