Section Description

This course will explore the language patterns of various ethnic minority groups in the U.S.. We will focus on the role of language in the construction of identity, cultural forms of expression (e.g., traditions of joking, culturally-specific speech events), inter-ethnic communication, bilingualism, non-verbal communication and language use in the classroom. We will additionally consider White ethnic groups, with a specific focus on White privilege and its relation to standard language ideology.
