Students develop and refine the ability to express themselves through songwriting as they study current songs, compose and perform original songs, and mentor classmates. No prerequisite. May not be counted toward the major.

In this course, students will study current songs, compose and perform original songs, and mentor classmates in a hands-on, supportive, collaborative environment. The goal is for each class member to develop and refine the ability to express himself/herself through songwriting.
Students will demonstrate: ? songwriting skill development ? an understanding of music fundamentals ? positive mentoring interactions Required Texts: Gillette, S. (1995). Songwriting and the Creative Process. Mitchell, K. (1996). Essential Songwriter?s Rhyming Dictionary. Zollo, P. (2003). Songwriters on Songwriting.
Grading: 30% - Creation, and performance of songs in class 10% - Coffeehouse performance (either at outside venue, or in-class) 10% - Mentoring participation 10% - Class participation (discussion of reading assignments and related topics, and song study discussion) 20% - Critical review papers 15% - Songwriters journal and Final paper 5% - Recording of best-work songs
