ENGS 330/251: Lit. of the New. Afr. Diaspora( Summer 1015) ENGS 330/251: Literature of the New African Diaspora(1980s-present) Course description: This seminar will examine the works of some of the most prominent African immigrant writers located in the US and Europe. The following texts refracting African immigrants? life-worlds and lived- experiences as they move in and out of different African and diasporic cultural sites will be examined in detail: Chimamanda Adichie?s Americanah, Chris Abani?s The Virgin of Flames , Leila Aboulela?s The Translator , and Teju Cole?s Open City. These writers? handling of issues like history, tradition, race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, globalism and identity formation will feature prominently in class discussions.

Section Expectation

Class presentations and two papers of about 15 pages on assigned topics. Students are encouraged to read the required novels before classes begin in May.
