Section Description

This course will explore the language patterns of a number of American ethnic minority groups ? so-called ?hyphenated Americans?. We will focus on the role of language in the construction of identity, cultural forms of expression (e.g., traditions of joking, culturally-specific speech events), inter-ethnic communication,bilingualism, non-verbal communication and language use in the classroom. We will additionally consider White ethnic groups, with a specific focus on White privilege and its relation to standard language ideology.
