More Information
Section Description
PBIO 187 Survey of Biochemistry: Laboratory is your chance to get up close and personal with fundamental concepts of biochemistry. Through our exploration of these concepts, you will gain experience in basic biochemical techniques and develop your ability to design appropriate experiments, critically analyze data, and present the findings of your analyses. Concepts we will explore include acid-base properties of amino acids, protein structure, enzyme activity, properties of lipids, carbohydrate chemistry, and gene expression. In addition, you will gain a understanding of the principles behind basic techniques that are used in a broad range of scientific research including titration, chromatography, spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis, mass spectroscopy, and microarrays. In addition to examining the principles behind these techniques ? basically, how they work ? we will consider their limitations ? what can they actually tell us and when should they be used.
Section Expectation
-Laboratory Manual: Handouts for each lab will be posted on BlackBoard. You will need to print out the handouts, use them to prepare for lab, and bring them with you to each lab period. -Safety glasses or goggles (required) -Laboratory coat (recommended) -Bound laboratory notebook: Any bound laboratory notebook with numbered pages is fine. It does NOT need to have carbon pages. -Scientific calculator
Evaluation
Grading will be based on assignments, lab reports, laboratory notebook, quizzes, and understanding of and participation in laboratory activities.
