The basis of inheritance, covering topics from classical genetics to modern molecular studies. Analysis of genetic data emphasized, from prokaryotic, animal, and plant systems. Pre/co-requisites: BIOL 001, BIOL 002 or BCOR 011, BCOR 012, CHEM 031, CHEM 032, organic chemistry recommended.

An introduction to the field of Genetics. BCOR 101 examines how traits are controlled by DNA through the processes of DNA replication, transcription and translation. We will discuss Mendel's laws, complications to Mendel's laws in human traits and we will also discuss medical applications of Genetics.
There will be three in class exams throughout the semester, worth 100 points each. The final will be cumulative and will be worth 200 points. The final will be twice as long as a normal exam and will cover all material equally from the entire course. There will be homework assigned for almost every chapter we cover in class. Homework assignments will be due in either the following class or immediately before an exam. Since the homework is good practice for the exam problems, all homework assignments are always due before an exam covering the same chapters is given. In addition to the end of the chapter homework assignments, you will also be required to write and present a gene report about one specific gene that you will assigned. The details of this assignment will be discussed in class.
