Section Description

Spanish 052 is designed to integrate all of the knowledge attained in the previous levels with a particular emphasis on honing students' ability to interact with others in both written and spoken Spanish through collaborative group activities. Many activities will help students develop the ability to express and share opinions on complex social and cultural topics, necessary for advanced level courses. In addition to reviewing key grammar points, we will gain practice in developing reading comprehension strategies through study of short literary works and essays from Imagina, as well as additional materials from other sources the professor may provide, including the film Al otro lado. Throughout the semester this course will focus on expanding awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures and broadening active vocabulary usage.

Section Expectation

Upon entering the course, students are expected to have an intermediate knowledge of Spanish grammar such as: 1) present, preterite and imperfect conjugations; 2) conjugations for the subjunctive in the past and present; 3) past participles; 4) reflexive verbs and direct and indirect object pronouns; 5) agreement. Students can expect to spend 2 hours outside of class preparing for each hour in class, including online homework assignments, reading and watching video, writing short papers and compositions, and studying for exams and quizzes.

Evaluation

The grade for this course is based on class participation, five short quizzes (the lowest grade dropped), six short writing assignments (the lowest grade dropped), two formal compositions (original and re-write), a partial exam and a final exam, a group presentation, and online homework.
