Section Description

I. Goals of Course This course is a great way to see how simple math is used in many different situations to help solve problems or answer questions. II. Who Should Take This Course? Most of the math in this course is arithmetic, though occasionally there is a bit of algebra. The math might be basic, but because this is an online course you will be teaching yourself many of the topics. In order to be successful in this class you should be a fairly competent mathematician, an independent learner, motivated, and not a procrastinator! If you are concerned about your ability to take a math course on-line, better to be safe than sorry. If you are a UVM student sign up for a traditional math class.

Section Expectation

III. What Will I Need for Math 17? Scientific Calculator Course Compass Code (See below) Textbook or e-book Excursions in Modern Mathematics by Peter Tannenbaum (Note: When you sign up for Course Compass you automatically have access to an e-book so there is no need to have a hard copy of the textbook unless that is your preference.) Along with motivation and a desire to learn, you will need either a hard copy or online version of the textbook, Excursions in Modern Mathematics by Peter Tannenbaum, (7th edition). You will find that unlike most math books, this one is pretty easy to follow, cleverly written, and has a sense of humor. I have taught out of this Tannenbaum text for many years, and most students find it a more than acceptable textbook. You will also need a Course Compass Access Code to allow you to use the online homework. IV. How does Course Compass Work? Course Compass is an online homework and test site. It runs just like BlackBoard so most of you will find it easy to navigate. V. Course Structure The structure of this course is pretty simple. The Course Schedule gives you the order the chapters will be covered and a timeline. Generally, you will read a chapter from the textbook, then complete the Course Compass homework assignment for that chapter. After the first set of chapters is completed, there will be a midterm exam. This same process is repeated for the second half of the course. VIII. Podcasts I have created some podcasts to help you work through some of the harder topics. Check them out. It's like you're in my office and I'm showing you how to solve the problems.
