Section Description

This online course examines the role, purpose, and value of sport in American history. The class is arranged chronologically, and we will explore many key themes as we move through the years: the politics of sport, the business of sport, sport as an arena of celebration and protest, sport and identity-formation, race and ethnicity in sport, gender and sport, and sport as part of nation-building in the American experience. There is one required text, many other readings on e-reserve.

Section Expectation

Regular participation in weekly moderated discussions; completion of personal journals (1-to-1 dialogue with the professor); completion of two essay.

Evaluation

Discussion board (25%), personal journals (25%), two essays (50%).
