About EDCI 200 Z15

Much of the current research on the achievement gap focuses on the black-white gap and the gap in urban schools. In New England, as well as other areas of the US, the income gap is more relevant, especially since in the last 25 years the black-white gap hasn't changed significantly in the US, while the rich-poor gap has grown substantially. We will be examining the achievement gap with a focus on rural poverty- the type found more often in areas such as Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. We will also challenge popular literature in asking whether we should be most concerned about the gap or about achievement. The course is divided into three units. In the first unit we will examine the individual, focusing on both our own personal place in education and how character affects achievement. Unit two targets the role of teachers and relationships, as well as school policies and practices. Finally, unit three will center on national policies and the successes and failures designed to narrow the gap and whether they promote achievement.
