Section Description

Art of the Essay will focus on the craft and techniques of writing personal essays for publication. We will read and study exemplary contemporary essays on cultural topics that are written with a personal slant, a high level of prose artistry, and humor, pathos, and intelligence. Students will then write, workshop, and revise several short essays for a final portfolio of writing. Readings will include The New York Times Opinionator blog, the online magazine Brevity, and the anthology In Short.

Section Expectation

Daily readings and discussions, writing exercises, and several short essays to be included in a final portfolio of finished writing.

Evaluation

Grade will be based on participation throughout the course and the final portfolio of essays.
