PA 395 ? Sustainable Resources via Effective Grant and Contract Management Course Summary: This course builds on the skills acquired in PA 305 (not a prerequisite) into some of the specific areas of finance that nonprofit and public leaders are likely to encounter regardless of their roles in an organization. We will undertake this work within the operational context of the United States system of federalism where the federal, state, county, and local governments work with the nonprofit and private sectors and a vast array or districts and authorities to serve the people of the nation. We will delve into the complex relationships that exist between the people in these organizations, link the literature to real life circumstances, and hone our communication and problem solving skills. The course is designed to help develop the skills of those who are aspiring to be leaders in the nonprofit and public sectors and those who are already working there. Content themes include: ? Managing the flow of resources from one sector to another and maximizing the resulting outcomes ? Grant writing and role of grant funds in the organization?s budget ? Bidding criteria, developing and issuing requests for proposals, and managing contracts ? Creating the infrastructure to provide a sustainable resource stream to fund an organization and its programs over the long term ? Managing the all-funds budget ? Balancing accountability and creativity in the finance arena ? Using financial tools to make a difference This course will be offered in a hybrid format with four face-to-face evening class sessions and the remainder online via Blackboard with ongoing interaction between students and with the instructor.
