This course will examine the biological aspects of both species and their environments in contributing to biological invasions. We will explore some of the leading theories and evidence on biological invasions: (1) genetic and evolutionary processes (2) population biology and life history attributes, (3) traits at the molecular, physiological and morphological and how they contribute to invasiveness, (4) properties of communities that lead to invasion and how interactions among native and invasive species affect communities and (5) effects of invasive species on ecosystem properties. The course will be based on reading the classics in the field of invasion biology as well as the current scientific literature.

Dates: May 18 - June 12, 2015; Cross listed with PBIO 195 Z3
This class covers the causes and consequences of biological invasions from an evolutionary and ecological perspective. We will focus on what makes invasive species so successful in the new habitat and apply basic biological principles to the problem. The course will be a mix of lecture, discussions of current readings and field trips to see local invasions in the Champlain Valley.
Students will be expected to attend all lectures, come to class having done the assigned reading and participate in all the lab field trips.
Student evaluation will be based on weekly quizzes, one final paper, a final presentation and written work and discussion of the assigned readings.
