This course will examine the biological aspects of both species and their environments in contributing to biological invasions. We will explore some of the leading theories and evidence on biological invasions: (1) genetic and evolutionary processes (2) population biology and life history attributes, (3) traits at the molecular, physiological and morphological and how they contribute to invasiveness, (4) properties of communities that lead to invasion and how interactions among native and invasive species affect communities and (5) effects of invasive species on ecosystem properties. The course will be based on reading the classics in the field of invasion biology as well as the current scientific literature.
