?Trick of the Light: The Art and Practice of Theatrical Lighting Design? will introduce students to the use of light as an integral element of design in the performing arts, specifically its use in theatrical production. During the course, students will be introduced to: - the history of lighting and its place in the collaborative nature of modern theatrical production; - the technology of lighting, its development and use in various forms of production; - the process of design from script analysis to design choices to the execution of the design; - the vocabulary of lighting and its use in both the design process and the assessment of the lighting design (the latter through attendance at productions and discussion of those designs); and - exercises in the use of equipment and projects in design to illustrate the above. In addition the students will have the opportunity to visit local theatres (the Flynn, Saint Michael?s Playhouse) and theatrical production companies (Dark Star and Production Advantage) to see examples of lighting in performance and modern theatrical lighting equipment. This class will appeal to high school and college level students, as well as high school teachers, interested in enhancing their knowledge of lighting either to acquire practical skills or to increase their appreciation of the contributions lighting makes to performance. It will appeal to anyone, in fact, interested in a better understanding of theatre. This will be a Hybrid/Blended class. Given the extensive amount of online support materials available on this subject, it will employ a ?flipped classroom? strategy to make the most of these types of resources to the greatest extent possible. Note: This class does not fulfill the requirements for Theatre majors, minors or concentrators.
