About HST 153 Z1

This course explores the relationship between the U.S. and Latin America from the wars for independence in the early 1800s through the present day, with a focus on case studies of both direct U.S. military/covert intervention (Cuba) and somewhat less direct U.S. economic intervention (Mexico). For each case study, you will engage in a project to explore some aspect of these issues in greater depth. The course materials include primary documents from multiple U.S. and Latin American perspectives, documentary films, and the writings of journalists and historians.

More Information

Section Description

This course provides an overview of the history of U.S. - Latin American relations. It also goes in-depth on three key issues: the connection between economics and U.S. foreign policy; the history of U.S.-Cuban relations (both before and after the Revolution); and the current debate over immigration from Latin America. I use a combination of lecture, discussion, activities, and films to keep us all engaged during the long class sessions. You'll read a wide variety of (mostly short) articles and documents, as well as one overview text. We'll spend some of our time in class working on your projects as well.

Section Expectation

Come to class and participate actively! And, bring your dinner! We go through the usual dinner hour, and no one can learn on an empty stomach! I love teaching this class in the summer session. We'll be a small group, and we can really get to know each other and explore the material in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

Evaluation

There is one map quiz, one 2-page document analysis paper, one 4-page policy memo, one in-class presentation with notes, and one in-class immigration policy roundtable.
