Section Expectation
Before we meet as a class: Find at least one article pertinent to this topic related to career(s) and and one related to college(s) in either newspapers, magazines or on the web, and bring a copy of each with you to the first class. Select a book from the list of books below (or propose a book not on the list) and let the instructors know which book you are planning to read. (The first person to ?claim? a book gets to read the book of his/her choice. Each book will only be read by one person.) Be prepared to present and discuss this book during the second class meeting time. E-mail the instructors about any questions or issues related to this topic that you want to make sure we cover during our time in class. Day1: We want to use the first day to focus on future planning by looking at ourselves from the aspects of the social/emotional, academic and personal domains, in terms of our high school-aged selves and how who we were then impacted (and continues to impact)our educational and career trajectories. We will take some interest inventories, look at the Naviance, VSAC and ONET websites as resources. We will take a look at the school system(s) that we work in (if you are presently employed as an educator) in terms of how the post secondary advising process works (or doesn?t). Day 2: On the second day, using a mock student?s profile, we will determine how best to advise and work with our student from the aspects of the social/emotional, academic and personal domains. Final assignment: Given that our mission is to serve all students, make a plan that you can implement in your school about how you will work with the administration and faculty to create a means to deliver a comprehensive post-secondary advising system to all students. Book options: What Color is your Parachute for teens - Carol Christen and Richard Bolles Job Searching With Social Media for Dummies Colleges that Change Lives - Loren Pope The Gatekeepers - Jacques Steinberg Harvard Schmarvard - Getting Beyond the Ivy League to the College that is best for you - Jay Matthews Taking Time Off - Colin Hall and Ron Liber The Gap Year Advantage - Karl Haigler and Rae Nelson
