About EDCO 291 Z3

Health Psychology: Counseling in the Medical Context Counseling in the medical context requires sharp diagnostic and clinical skills, broad and deep cultural awareness, personal adaptability, and skillful navigation of complex systems. It is an arena where the professional counselor?s emphasis on client strength and adaptive coping resources is central to success. Medical counseling requires familiarity with family systems, professional consultation, and multi-modal treatment modalities, in addition to a solid grounding in the person-centered approach. The magnitude of suffering is immense and the opportunities for compassion (as well as burn-out) constant. This course provides an introduction to counseling in the medical context using two real case examples to guide course discussions. (Wednesday, June 19, 2013. No class meeting. Students receive syllabus and readings; Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday June 27. Class meets for two-day intensive sessions Wednesday, July 3. No class meeting. Assignment one completed and submitted by midnight; Wednesday, July 10. No class meeting. Final project completed and submitted by midnight).
