Course reviews the history of, and managerial challenges inherent to, the non-profit sector in the United States and explores sector's relationship to the governmental and business sectors.

Welcome! This class is a broad overview of the nonprofit sector in the United States. We will focus on various key aspects of the nonprofit sector throughout the week, including an exploration of public policy, the history of the nonprofit workforce, and philanthropy as well as the basics of nonprofit management ? strategic planning, fundraising, board development, and strategies for sustainability. The face-to-face section of this class is Monday ? Friday, May 19 ? 23, 2014 from 8:00 ? 2:00. Between May 23 and June 20 you will be responsible for completing one research project and presenting that project to your fellow classmates on line.
I expect you to arrive each morning having read the assigned material and prepared to participate actively in the class discussions. The intensive nature of this course absolutely requires active student participation. The class format will be a mix of lecture, discussion, guest speakers and presentations by you. These are exciting times for the nonprofit sector and there is no lack of contemporary literature, media reports, academic and practitioner analysis and congressional reports for you to investigate in addition to the assigned readings.
