Section Description

Fiction, myth, personal narrative, even film and song--contemporary American Indian writing takes many forms but they all provide windows into the lives and dreams of America's forgotten minority. Among the themes we will explore are life on the rez, creation myths and vision quests, dealings with the white world, and reclaiming the past. In addition to reading and writing about the stories and poems in the texts, you'll get to see three great films, Dreamkeeper, Skins, and Smoke Signals. COURSE MATERIALS Nothing But the Truth: An Anthology of Native American Literature--Purdy and Ruppert; The Woman Who Fell from the Sky--Joy Harjo; The Way to Rainy Mountain--N. Scott Momaday; Three DVD's: Dreamkeeper, Skins, Smoke Signals--The bookstore will not be stocking these DVDs but you can buy all three from Amazon. WARNING--Dreamkeeper has risen in price since last year but I believe you'll find it worth it. Amazon shows several dozen new and used copies available for purchase. UVM Media Services has ordered a copy that will be on reserve for viewing in the library, granted not much help if you'll be out of state for the summer. I'm told that you can get it from Netflix but I think you have to order it well in advance. DON'T order the tv series. It is incomplete. And final warning--be sure you order Dreamkeeper singular. There are several others out there in the plural. Totally different beast. Sorry to be making such a big deal out of this but the film is not to be missed.

Section Expectation

COURSEWORK EXPECTATIONS. Plan to spend several hours a day on the course. Read the assigned text, articles, or websites for each lesson. Respond to each reading assignment in a reflective writing and/or a posting to the discussion board. Participate actively in all discussions. Submit reading response (RR) essays following the guidelines as scheduled. CONTRIBUTIONS IN CLASS Participants are expected to review all links posted in the lessons and take an active role in class discussions. Participation in discussion forum topics must be timely.


Course grade will be based on your Journal Writes, contributions to the Discussion Board and four Reading Response essays.
