This course emphasizes archaeological method and theory through hands-on experience in the field. Following a four day instructional period in the classroom on campus, the class will travel to Anguilla in the British West Indies for four weeks of archaeological field work. Broad research themes include interisland interaction, environmental adaptation, and heritage management. Students will: 1) investigate pre-Columbian Amerindian settlement of the island; 2) learn archaeological site mapping and excavation techniques and; 3) develop skills in artifact identification and processing.

Class will be from 7:30-4:00 M-F and will include active participation in field and laboratory work in a tropical climate. The course also will include field trips to archaeological sites on Anguilla and the neighboring island of St. Martin. A variety of readings, organized around themes, will be assigned to complement the classroom instruction and field work. Readings should take about 2-3 hrs per week and will be made available in hardcopy and/or on Blackboard.

1) Full participation in the archaeological field and laboratory work 2) A synthetic but brief analysis of two or more archaeological site reports 3) An evaluation by the instructors of each student?s participation in all aspects of the course.
