About MU 019 Z1

Explore the culture and music of Latin Jazz through a full-day, one-week intensive course. Dubbed /la combinacion perfecta/, Latin Jazz fuses the sophisticated harmonies, melodies, and improvisations of North American jazz with the complex rhythms and chordal vamps of the Afro-Caribbean. After studying its roots in Afro-Cuban, Caribbean, and Brazilian traditions, this course examines the influence of Latin dance music on the popular music of the United States. Latin Jazz is explored from its inception in New York City during the 1940s to the present. Each day's classes are divided into two parts: morning sessions will focus on historical and cultural background through lectures, readings, listening, and videos; afternoon sessions take place at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts led by special guest artist Arturo O'Farrill, and will offer hands-on workshops in ensemble playing and hand percussion. The class is open to both experienced musicians and novices. While no previous musical training is required, participants must be willing to participate in skills-building workshops. The class culminates in a performance at the FlynnSpace on the final day of class. Please visit http://www.uvm.edu/~summer/programs/arts/latin-jazz/ for more information on the participation expectations of this course. Some reading is required prior to the first day of class. Registration will not be considered complete until the student has submitted an application form and been accepted into the program. The application form may be found here: http://www.uvm.edu/~summer/programs/arts/latin-jazz/application/
