Basic introduction to Geography by way of a regional approach to human and environmental topics.
Todd Morehouse ()
Dates: June 20 - July 15, 2016
World Regional Geography takes into account environmental, climatological, cultural, economic, social, and political factors to better understand the major regions of the world. For the summer course, we will focus on some challenges related to contemporary global environmental change. Towards this end, we will be taking a close look at the politics of water (specifically water scarcity and clean water as a human right). This course is organized around a selection of literature that includes: geographical scholarship on nature-society interactions, environmental justice, political ecology, contemporary journalism, and global environmental assessment reports. In drawing together a diverse selection of literature, this course seeks to analyze how and why the present global environmental predicament came to be. Further, through the development of insights pertaining to the past and present factors contributing to global environmental degradation, this course aims to develop nuanced perspectives on anticipated environmental challenges.
Students will be graded on the following: Participation in online forums. Reading Reflections/Journals. Short (1-2 pg) Op-Ed Writing Assignment. Short (3-4 pg) Final Paper on the politics of water
