Use of digital cameras, Adobe Photoshop, and inkjet printing processes as means for description, analysis, and expression of experience. Prerequisites: ARTS 012, and one of the following: ARTH 005, ARTH 006, or ARTH 008.
Thomas Brennan ()
Dates: May 19 - June 13, 2014; or instructor permission; Lab fee:$50 This is a 3 credit studio art class which requires more hours than a conventional course.
This course will cover camera fundamentals (film and digital), working with image files in Photoshop, and printing. The course also covers elements of design that are inherent to the photograph such as focus, depth of field, shutter speed, framing, and vantage point. Finally, we will be concerned with content; emotional, narrative, documentary, are all ways of describing intended and/or unintended content. Of course we will talk about color, as theory, as technical practice, and as an element of visual response.
You may email me should you have any questions about expectations for cameras or prerequisites. Having said that, I can tell you that I usually waive the prerequisites for the summer section, thus encouraging a range of prior experiences into the class. And, regarding a camera, a digital SLR is the most practical choice for a class where turnaround speed is desirable, although a film SLR will also work effectively.
