Introduction to techniques and equipment used for the isolation and quantitative analysis of amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and DNA enzymes in biological materials. Pre/co-requisite: BIOC 185. Cross-listed with: BIOC 187.
Laura Almstead ()
Dates: June 29-August 7, 2015; Pre/co-requisite: PBIO 185 or instructor permission MW 1:00-4:45 for 4 weeks (June 29 - July 24), then post work from July 27 - August 7 for students to do on their own if needed
PBIO 187 Survey of Biochemistry Lab is an opportunity to get up close and personal with fundamental concepts of biochemistry that we explore in PBIO 185. Through our analyses, you will gain experience in basic biochemical techniques and develop your ability to analyze data and present the findings of your analyses. Concepts we will explore include acid-base properties of amino acids, protein isolation and analysis, enzyme kinetics, carbohydrate chemistry, and lipid properties. Experiments will involve techniques used in a broad range of scientific research such as titration, spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry.
Course Materials (required) -Lab Handouts: posted on BlackBoard (must be printed and brought to lab) -Ring binder (1?) for Lab Handouts -Lab notebook: bound composition style notebook with graph paper (quad) ruling** -Scientific calculator -Safety glasses or goggles (available at the bookstore) **NOTE: Please do NOT purchase a spiral-ring notebook or a notebook with carbon paper!
Grades will be based on participation, quizzes, assignments, lab reports (2), an oral presentation, and a lab practical.
