This introductory-level course surveys the main developments in the history of modern Europe from the end of the Thirty Years War to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Topics to be discussed include: the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, the French and Industrial Revolutions, the birth of modern political ideologies, the age of imperialism, and the two catastrophic world wars of the Twentieth Century. We will be especially concerned with exploring changes in thought and culture against the backdrop of social and economic transformations, and will draw on a variety of sources to illustrate this history including contemporary writings, photographs, and paintings.
