Celebrating a Century of Summer EducationOne hundred years ago, the University of Vermont began offering summer school to on-campus students and off-campus professionals, most notably the state's teachers and principals. According to the first catalog, summer classes would help students finish their degrees earlier and educators to further their learning. In their free time, they could enjoy one of Vermont's most beautiful seasons by taking excursions to forests, farms, beaches, parks and Burlington's bustling city center.
A lot may have changed since 1909 - Burlington and UVM have grown, and the university attracts students from all over the world. But the goals behind Summer University remain the same: provide classes that allow students to expand their base of knowledge and advance in their careers, all while experiencing summertime in beautiful Vermont. One of the nation’s most livable cities, Burlington boasts a downtown brimming with activity in shops, theaters, coffeehouses and sidewalk cafes, as well a waterfront transformed into a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. In the surrounding area, students can hike, sail, swim, kayak, bike, camp, rock-climb and more. Both inside and outside the classroom, they can find opportunities to learn and explore.
