Happy
1st of September, all!
The Staff Council Office is now open for
in-person business. Our hours are still
8:30-4:00 M-F, and now Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays will see the
office open and staffed.
We've ended (for now) the COVID-19 Campus
& Community Resources weekly
newsletter and are instead rolling that
content into Staffline, which
will now come out twice a month - the
first business day of each month, and the
midpoint of the month.
As ever, we welcome your thoughts and
suggestions.
Cheers,
The Staff Council Office Staff

On
August 25th, the Staff Council
Executive Board sent a letter
of support (PDF) for
re-raising the Black Lives Matter
flag outside the Davis Center or
in a similarly prominent place.
Other recent formal Staff Council
communications and
responses may be found on
our website.

In
each committee's August meeting,
new co-chairs were elected and the
year's priorities were discussed.
Last year's ongoing projects were
also reviewed. September's
meetings will involve making
decisions about what topics to
pursue and selecting subcommittees
to head up these efforts, so more
specific information will be
announced then. |

A
working group was created under
the auspices of the Staff Council
Executive Board and led by Staff
Council Vice President Caleb
Gilbert, and is tasked with
examining how Staff Council can
strive toward being an actively
antiracist organization. This
committee has been meeting weekly
and has thus far focused on Staff
Council's Mission Statement and
bylaws as well as meeting
structure and processes, and
training and development
opportunities. If you have
suggestions, or would like to join
this working group, please contact
Caleb
Gilbert (email link) or Elisabeth
Blair (email link). |

this year's Staff Art Exhibit will be
online only. We'd love for you to submit
photographs of your art OR artful
photographs to be displayed online
during the second half of this month.
Please fill in
this form, disregarding
questions about physical dimensions or

There
are still no dates published for
September on the VT
Human Resources website,
nor on the VT
Foodbank website, but check
those sites frequently for
updates, as there was a delay
earlier in the summer before they
posted all of July and August's
meal and food pick-ups.
And in the meantime, take a look
at our PDF
index of all resources,
which includes a large number of
food and meal resources. |

The
impact of COVID-19 on Black,
Indigenous, and People of Color
(BIPOC) continues to be much
greater than on other groups, and
becoming familiar with the
movements advocating for these
communities is essential for
learning how we might
(individually and collectively)
stop contributing to this
fact.
This week, look deeper
into what the Black Lives Matter
movement is about. The
Black
Lives Matter Global Network
is dedicated to "imagining and
creating a world free of
anti-Blackness, where every Black
person has the social, economic,
and political power to thrive." Their
website is a great place to
get a more detailed understanding
of the whats and whys of this
movement. |

This
Thursday from 4:00 - 5:30,
the UVM Union of Students,
UVM United Against Cuts, and
Black Lives Matter UVM will be
participating in a "Die-In".
From their Facebook
event:
"Our administration has
consistently failed to listen to
its students, its teachers, and
the BIPOC community all summer,
and as a result, people will be
more susceptible to illness and
death, and so we're mourning. We
mourn the loss of our education
due to the administration refusing
to pay Non-Tenure Track faculty a
living wage, the precarity and
danger of staff positions, the
closing of the Campus Children's
School, and the general
underfunding ad cutting of
programs needed for our most
marginalized communities." |

As
there are an abundance of
spiritual and religious traditions
represented at UVM, so there are a
multitude of special days observed
throughout the world every week.
As the new academic year begins,
check out this calendar
(PDF) and learn more about
your colleagues' and neighbors'
traditions.
For more information, visit the UVM
Interfaith Center's website.

The
start of the academic year is a
great time to remind ourselves
about best practices for working
comfortably! The UVM
Ergonomics webpage has a lot
of great tips, including the
importance of taking frequent
breaks. |
