As we begin a new academic year, I want to welcome our new staff members to campus.  We are delighted to have you on our team as we advance the educational and academic mission of this great University.  I also want to express our deep gratitude to a number of our longest-serving staff members, who have retired in the last few months.  Your efforts have shaped this institution and made a significant contribution to the high quality of our programs and services.  Over the course of your careers, you helped thousands of students successfully complete their degrees.  We hope that you will continue to participate actively in the UVM family as retirees.

For those of you who are just joining this vibrant community, I know that you will benefit, as I have, from the extensive institutional knowledge of our committed long-standing staff members. Our staff shows that UVM is a strong talent magnet for the best and the brightest.

We are very fortunate to have so many staff members who have served this institution for a number of decades.  The numbers tell an extraordinary story.  In the fiscal year 2013, 41 staff members retired representing 990 years of total service to the University.  One exceptional recent retiree served UVM for 32 years in the Office of Admissions and spearheaded the transition from traditional print to the expansion of web communications and the use of social media.

As I mentioned in my fall welcome letter, I am very excited about the establishment of the new Presidential Staff Recognition Awards Program.  We will give six distinguished awards annually in honor of staff members who have made significant contributions to our shared values on campus as they are expressed in “Our Common Ground” University statement.  Any member of the UVM community can nominate a staff member for a Common Ground award, and I strongly encourage you all to participate in the nomination process.

I hope the legacy of staff dedication and the will inspire us all to continue working together and supporting each other as we bring the University into the next era of excellence.

With deep appreciation,

Tom Sullivan

President
