Greetings! The fall semester is in full swing. We recognized and celebrated the contributions of UVM staff through several well attended Staff Appreciation Week Events in September including the highly successful Second Annual UVM Staff Art Exhibit and Reception sponsored by the Staff Council and the Davis Center Arts Team.

In the past, staff awaited for the Social on the Green to find out if the President would again be granting additional days off between Christmas and New Year’s. However, last year, Interim President Bramley made these Winter Break days permanent. You can find these dates listed on the Administrative Holiday Schedule as December 26, 27 and 28.

The four Staff Council Standing Committees along with the Staff Council Executive Board have all had their first meetings for this year, elected their chairs and vice chairs, and have identified their priorities for 2012-2013.

Some of the issues which we will be focusing on this year include continued discussions with Vice President for Finance and Administration Richard Cate on the University budget and salary concerns for staff. We will continue to meet with Associate Vice President for Human Resource Services Barbara Johnson on benefit issues; we have been looking specifically at the needs of nursing mothers at UVM in response to concerns raised by staff.

In addition, issues from last year have been carried over to this year and include mandatory performance appraisals, supervisory training, a new Staff Council survey for 2013, as well as ways to collaborate, provide feedback, and support the comprehensive diversity professional development initiative led by Chief Diversity Officer Wanda Heading-Grant and the ongoing work of the University Benefits Advisory Council (UBAC).

As we all look forward to the October 5th installation of Tom Sullivan, the 26th President of the University of Vermont, we are reminded that fall is a time of change and with that change comes opportunities for the entire UVM community.
