WHAT IS OFF CAMPUS WORK STUDY?
Off campus work study allows students to work in preapprove nonprofit agencies who have made an agreement with UVM in order to participate in the Federal Work Study Program at UVM. If your agency is interested in participating in the program, please fill out this Off Campus Request to Participate form.
HOW DOES AN EMPLOYER BECOME ELIGIBLE TO EMPLOY WORK STUDY STUDENTS?
HOW MANY STUDENTS CAN I EMPLOY?
As many as you believe you can afford and/or manage. Please call or email the Federal Work Study Program Coordinator for further consultation about how many students you may want to host.
WHO DETERMINES THE PAY RANGES?
It is the responsibility of the Federal Work Study Coordinator, in keeping with federal regulations and in consultation with partners of the program (UVM Human Resource Services and Payroll Services, Career Services, and Supervisors) to determine the ranges within each pay level.
Pay rates are be evaluated annually.
WHO DETERMINES A STUDENT’S HOURLY WAGE?
Currently, pay rates are broken into four levels, reflecting the depth and breadth responsibilities associated with the position. The supervisor is responsible for determining the level of a position and the hourly wage within that level; the Federal Work Study Coordinator is available for consultation should a supervisor be unsure of how to categorize a position.
DO PAYRATES HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MINIMUM WAGE?
Yes! The minimum Level I pay rate MUST not fall below the VT minimum wage (i.e. usually it will be the same number).
DO PAYRATES HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH NON-Federal Work Study WAGES?
Yes! Federal Work Study wages need to remain competitive, at least to some degree, with market wages. This is especially true of the Level IV pay range, which should reflect what students in more advanced roles (i.e. Program Coordinator, Computer Programmer, and Laboratory Technician with little supervision) can earn outside of the Federal Work Study Program.
CAN FEDERAL WORK STUDY STUDENTS RECEIVE RAISES?
Yes! Students can receive wage increases (i.e. raises) within the pay range for their position at the supervisor’s discretion. With this in mind, it’s important that each pay level span enough of a range to reflect merit-based increases as well as raises that may simply come from staying in the same position over time. If you run your Work Study Report within PeopleSoft you can find all the information you need to successfully and efficiently request this increase. It is recommended that you complete a mid-year/end of the semester evaluation for the student to justify the increase.
WHAT’S THE CONNECTION BETWEEN FEDERAL WORK STUDY PAYRATES & FEDERAL WORK STUDY AWARD AMOUNTS?
There is a strong connection between the two. It’s extremely important to bear in mind that while higher wages may benefit the student (i.e. earn the Federal Work Study award in fewer hours), raising the pay rates annually may have a detrimental affect on UVM offices and departments (as well as off-campus Federal Work Study employers).
DO I NEED A RESUME TO APPLY TO A POSITION?
No, you do not NEED a resume but if you want to be considered for positions that require more skill you may consider drafting one to best market yourself. Career Services has couselors on staff who can guide you through the process of developing a basic resume.
DOES MY FEDERAL WORK STUDY PAYCHECK GO TOWARD MY TUITION?
No, your paycheck is yours and you may do what you want with it. Some students will budget the pay check to pay for the next semester's books or other incidentals.
CAN I EARN MY SPRING ALLOCATION IN THE FALL SEMESTER?
We do NOT recommend that students earn their spring semester award allotment during the fall for the following reasons:
1) Technically, the student is not eligible to receive these funds. As per the federal guidelines on the disbursement of the award, the student must be enrolled as a full time student to receive these funds.
2) If the student earned the funds prematurely and then chose not to enroll as a full time student then:
a) the student would need to return these earnings to Student Financial Services
b) due to employment law, the department would be liable to pay the student for 100% of the spring award used.
CAN I EARN MY FALL ALLOCATION IN THE SPRING SEMESTER?
Yes. If a student has remaining funds from the Fall Semester, these will automatically roll over into the spring semester.
